Derivation of Name Yaesu

The name Yaesu is derived from a Dutch sailor who used to reside in Yaesu area back in Edo period about 400 years ago. Jan Joosten van Loodensteyn left Netherland in 1598 with a trading ship The De Liefde to circumnavigate the globe. Unfortunately, the voyage had a terrible end as the ship wrecked in Kyusyu Japan 1600. Jan Joosten eventually won the trust from the future Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu for his work as a translator and an advisor on foreign and military affairs. Then Jan Joosten was given a residence in edo nearby edo castle and allowed to marry to a Japanese woman. Interestingly enough the area he used to reside came to be called like his name; as the sound of his name “Jan Joosten” is pronounced as YA-E-SU in Japanese language.
